I am attending college for Fashion Design. My dream is to make a boutique for fashionable plus-sized clothing, as well as formal and wedding gowns that aren’t terribly unfashionable or unflattering for larger women. When I told my academic advisor this, she laughed, and said “If they want to look good they should lose weight! If fatties don’t care about their appearance why should we?” I was shocked, and tried to redirect my conversation to my intended career path and recommended classes, and she shook her head, saying, “Don’t bother, nobody marries fat people anyway.” Nevermind the fact that I am twice her size (5’5”, 245 lbs) and sporting an engagement ring while I sit in her office.
Thin privilege is having future fashion designers encouraged to design for you, instead of told that you don’t care what you look like.
